Why Is My Candy Paint Too Dark?

Candy paint is a transparent coating. Every additional coat makes the colour darker and more saturated. If your Candy paint looks too dark, the most common reasons are too many coats, coats applied too heavily, or an unsuitable base coat.

Why does Candy paint become darker?

Candy paint works differently from a conventional solid colour. It is transparent and allows light to pass through to the base coat. The reflected light then travels back through the coloured layer, creating the characteristic depth and brilliance of a Candy finish.

Each additional coat colours more of the reflected light, making the finish richer, deeper and darker.

Common reasons why Candy paint becomes too dark

• too many Candy coats,
• coats applied too heavily,
• spraying too close to the surface,
• moving the spray gun too slowly,
• using a base coat that is too dark,
• uneven application.

Which base coat should you use?

For Candy paints we recommend a bright silver metallic or pearl base coat. This provides the reflective surface needed to achieve the characteristic depth and vibrant appearance.

Applying Candy over a black or dark base coat will result in a much darker finish and reduce the typical Candy effect.

How many coats should be applied?

Candy should always be applied in very thin coats. The number of coats depends on the desired colour intensity. It is better to build up the colour gradually and check the result after each coat.

Once the desired colour has been achieved, additional coats are usually unnecessary.

Can a Candy paint that is too dark be fixed?

If the finish is already too dark, it usually cannot be lightened simply by applying another coat. In most cases the surface must be prepared again and the painting process repeated.

For smaller projects, always test the application on a sample panel before painting the final part.

How can you avoid this problem?

• use the correct bright silver base coat,
• apply very thin Candy coats,
• allow proper flash-off time between coats,
• check the colour after each coat,
• avoid trying to achieve the final colour with one heavy coat.
