Why Is Ghost Pearl Barely Visible?

Short answer

Ghost Pearl is intentionally a subtle pearl effect. Over a white base, it should look discreet in normal light and become more visible mainly in sunlight, under strong light or from a certain viewing angle. If the effect is almost not visible at all, the most common causes are the wrong base, too little effect paint, unsuitable light or missing clear coat.

What should Ghost Pearl look like?

Ghost Pearl is not a standard opaque paint and not a strong pearl colour. It is a subtle effect designed to stay discreet on a white base in normal light. When sunlight or strong direct light hits the surface, a coloured pearl reflection appears.

This subtle appearance is the main feature of the Ghost Pearl effect. The surface should remain mostly light or white, but a soft coloured reflection should appear when the viewing angle changes.

Why is a white base so important?

Ghost Pearl is designed for a white base. White creates a clean bright foundation that allows the subtle pearl effect to show correctly. If the base is grey, dark, black or uneven in colour, the result may be weak, greyish or completely different from what the customer expects.

For Ghost Pearl paints, we therefore recommend using an even matte white base. The Ghost Pearl effect layer is applied only over this base.

Why is the effect hard to see indoors or in the shade?

Ghost Pearl reacts strongly to light. In the shade, in a garage, under weak lighting or in diffuse light, the effect may be very subtle or almost invisible. This does not necessarily mean that the application was wrong.

The true appearance is best checked in daylight, ideally in sunlight or under stronger direct light. The effect also changes depending on the viewing angle.

How many coats of Ghost Pearl should be applied?

We usually recommend applying Ghost Pearl in 2–3 thin, even coats. The goal is to create a subtle pearl reflection, not to cover the white base with a heavy coloured layer.

If too little effect paint is applied, Ghost Pearl may look very weak. If too many coats are applied, the final shade may become too coloured, uneven or lose its subtle character.

Why does clear coat make the effect stronger?

Clear coat is very important for the Ghost Pearl effect. Before clear coat is applied, the effect layer may look matte, dry or less intense. The final clear coat adds gloss, depth and helps make the pearl effect more visible.

For this reason, the final result should not be judged only before clear coat. The final appearance is created only after proper clear coat application.

Most common causes of a weak Ghost Pearl effect

• wrong or not sufficiently white base,
• grey, dark or uneven base,
• too few coats of Ghost Pearl paint,
• uneven application of the effect layer,
• checking the effect only in the shade or under weak light,
• missing clear coat,
• too thick or uneven coats.

Can Ghost Pearl be too strong?

Yes. If too many coats are applied, the effect can change from a subtle pearl reflection into a stronger colour tone. The surface may then no longer look like a clean Ghost Pearl effect over white, but more like a lightly coloured pearl paint.

This is why we recommend working in thin coats and checking the effect during application. With Ghost Pearl, the goal is not to fully cover the white base, but to give it a soft coloured reflection.

How to achieve the correct Ghost Pearl effect

• use a clean matte white base,
• the base must be even and free of patches,
• apply Ghost Pearl in thin, even coats,
• usually 2–3 coats are enough,
• allow the paint to flash off briefly between coats,
• check the result in daylight or under stronger direct light,
• always protect the final effect with a suitable clear coat.

Why does the paint look different in the spray can or cup?

Ghost Pearl paint may look different in the container, cup or spray can than on the finished part. The true effect appears only after application over the correct white base and after clear coat is applied.

Do not judge the final appearance by the colour in the container, but by the result on a properly prepared white base.
