Which Clear Coat Should I Choose: 1K or 2K?

Short answer

If the painted part needs to resist weather, washing, chemicals, mechanical stress or fuel, we recommend using 2K clear coat. It is more durable, cures chemically and is better suited for cars, motorcycles, wheels, exterior parts and surfaces exposed to long-term use.

1K clear coat is easier to use and may be sufficient for less demanding parts, decorations, interior parts or hobby projects. However, it does not offer the same mechanical and chemical resistance as 2K clear coat.

PMcolours effect paints such as Chameleon / Flip-Flop, Candy, Pearl, Ghost Pearl, Hologram or Glitter must always be sealed with clear coat. For the best result and durability, we generally recommend 2K clear coat.

What is the difference between 1K and 2K clear coat?

1K clear coat is a one-component product. It is not activated with hardener and dries mainly by solvent evaporation after application. It is simple to use, but its final resistance is limited.

2K clear coat is a two-component product. It contains clear coat and hardener, which react chemically after activation. This creates a harder, more durable and more stable layer. 2K clear coat is therefore more suitable for parts that will be used, washed or exposed to outdoor conditions.

When should you choose 1K clear coat?

1K clear coat can be suitable where high durability is not required. It is easier to use and does not need to be consumed within a limited time after activation.

• small hobby projects,
• decorative parts,
• interior parts,
• less stressed surfaces,
• quick repairs or test samples,
• situations where chemical and mechanical resistance is not critical.

With 1K clear coat, it is important to remember that it is more sensitive to fuel, solvents, aggressive cleaners, mechanical damage and long-term outdoor exposure.

When should you choose 2K clear coat?

We recommend 2K clear coat for most final applications where the result should be durable and long-lasting. It is especially suitable for parts exposed to use, weather, washing, chemicals or fuel.

• automotive parts,
• motorcycle parts,
• wheels,
• exterior parts,
• fuel tanks, fuel caps and areas around the fuel filler,
• parts exposed to frequent washing or chemicals,
• projects where long-term durability is important.

2K clear coat is significantly more resistant than 1K clear coat. If the painted part will actually be used, 2K clear coat is usually the safer choice.

2K spray is single-use after activation

With a 2K spray can, it is important to remember that a chemical reaction starts inside the can after activation. The spray can must then be used within the pot life specified by the manufacturer.

Even if material still comes out of the can later, it may no longer work or cure correctly. That is why it is best to prepare the work in advance and activate the 2K spray only when the part is ready to be painted.

Effect paints always need clear coat

Effect paints are not the final protective layer. Their purpose is to create the colour and effect. The final protection, gloss, depth and resistance are provided by the clear coat.

Without clear coat, the effect layer will be less durable, more sensitive to damage and will not have the correct depth or final appearance. Clear coat should therefore never be skipped with Candy, Chameleon / Flip-Flop, Pearl, Ghost Pearl, Hologram or Glitter paints.

Can 1K clear coat be used over effect paint?

Yes, 1K clear coat can be used over effect paint, but only where lower durability is acceptable. It may be sufficient for decorative or less stressed parts.

What to watch out for when using 2K clear coat

• activate 2K clear coat only shortly before use,
• shake the spray can thoroughly after activation,
• respect the pot life,
• work at a suitable temperature, ideally around 20–25 °C,
• use suitable protective equipment and ensure ventilation,
• do not apply overly heavy coats,
• allow the clear coat to cure sufficiently before assembly, washing or polishing.
