Which Clear Coat Is Resistant to Fuel?
Short answer
For resistance to fuel, we recommend a 2K clear coat. Standard 1K clear coat is not suitable for contact with fuel. If you are painting a motorcycle tank, fuel cap, areas around the filler neck or other highly exposed parts, choose a high-quality 2K clear coat.
Why does 1K clear coat not resist fuel well?
1K clear coat dries by solvent evaporation. After drying, it forms a protective layer, but it does not have the same chemical resistance as a 2K clear coat. Fuel, cleaners or more aggressive chemicals can soften, attack, dull or damage the surface of a 1K clear coat.
For lightly used decorative parts, 1K clear coat may be sufficient. However, we do not recommend it for areas where contact with fuel may occur.
Why is 2K clear coat more resistant?
2K clear coat cures chemically after activation. The reaction between the clear coat and the hardener creates a harder, more resistant and more stable surface than a standard 1K clear coat.
Properly cured 2K clear coat offers significantly better resistance to fuel, chemicals, UV radiation, weather and frequent washing. This is why it is used on car body parts, motorcycle parts, wheels and other outdoor or highly exposed parts.
Where is fuel resistance important?
- motorcycle tanks,
- fuel caps,
- areas around the filler neck,
- scooters and mopeds,
- bodywork areas where fuel contact may occur,
- parts exposed to frequent washing or chemicals.
What happens if fuel gets on 1K clear coat?
It depends on the type of clear coat, curing time and length of contact. On 1K clear coat, fuel may cause dulling, softening of the surface, marks, stains or loss of gloss. If the fuel is wiped off quickly, damage may not always be immediately visible, but the risk is much higher than with 2K clear coat.
Is 2K clear coat completely resistant to fuel?
2K clear coat has much better chemical resistance than 1K clear coat, but this does not mean it is designed for permanent immersion in fuel. It is suitable for normal accidental contact, for example during refuelling, if the clear coat has been applied correctly and fully cured.
If fuel gets onto the painted surface, wipe it off as soon as possible with a soft, clean cloth.
Which clear coat should you choose?
If you are painting a part that may come into contact with fuel or more aggressive chemicals, choose a 2K clear coat. With effect paints such as Chameleon, Candy, Pearl or Ghost Pearl, 2K clear coat also helps improve the depth of the effect, gloss and long-term durability of the entire paint system.
Summary

- Fuel can dull, soften or damage 1K clear coat.
- 2K clear coat cures chemically after activation and offers significantly higher resistance.
- Even 2K clear coat is not designed for permanent immersion in fuel.
- If fuel gets on the surface, wipe it off as soon as possible.
