How to Paint Pearl Effect Paints: 3-Step Guide

Pearl effect paint – spray can application guide (400 ml)

1) Black base coat – spray can

• Lightly matt the filled surface with Scotch-Brite to remove dust and small particles, degrease it with silicone remover and wipe it with an antistatic tack cloth.
• Apply black BC basecoat in 2–3 thin coats with approx. 5 minutes flash-off time between coats. Apply the base coat only over filler without sand-through spots and always keep the base coat matte. The goal is a uniform matte film.
• After the final coat, allow approx. 20 minutes flash-off time. The surface should be matte and no longer tacky to the touch.

2) Pearl effect paint – spray can

• Shake the spray can well for at least 2 minutes and make a test spray on a sample panel.
• Apply 2–3 thin coats with approx. 10 minutes flash-off time between coats. Keep a distance of 20–30 cm and maintain even overlap, approx. 70%.
• Work smoothly and do not start or finish the spray pass in the middle of the part – this helps prevent stripes.

3) Clear coat – spray can

• Choose gloss, satin or matte according to your preferred final look. Apply the clear coat in 2 medium coats, or 3 thin coats, according to the TDS of the selected clear coat.
• If you apply clear coat the next day, lightly matt the surface first.

Pearl effect paint – spray gun application

Base coat – first step

Lightly matt the filled surface with Scotch-Brite, degrease it with silicone remover and wipe it with an antistatic tack cloth. Pearl effect paint requires a black base coat. Apply the base coat only over filler without sand-through spots and always choose a non-glossy base coat. Allow approx. 5 minutes flash-off time between coats. Usually 2–3 thin coats are enough. After the final coat, allow approx. 20 minutes flash-off time until the surface is matte and no longer tacky.

Pearl effect paint – second step, spray gun

Apply the pearl effect paint over the flashed-off black base coat in 2–3 thin coats with approx. 10 minutes flash-off time between coats. When using a spray gun, HVLP is required. Recommended nozzle size is 1.3–1.4 mm. Thin the paint in a 1:1 ratio. After the final coat, allow the pearl layer to flash off for approx. 40 minutes. At this point, the surface must be dry enough to be lightly wiped with an antistatic tack cloth.

Clear coat – third step

After the pearl layer has flashed off, apply the clear coat. You can choose a gloss, satin or matte effect – it depends on your personal preference. Follow the clear coat manufacturer’s instructions. Clear coat run? It can still be repaired.
