How to Apply Flip-Flop Paint – Complete Guide

Flip-Flop paint – spray can application guide (400 ml)

1) Black basecoat – spray can

• Lightly matt the prepared surface, degrease it with silicone remover / degreaser and wipe it with an antistatic tack cloth.
• Apply black 1K basecoat in 2–3 thin coats, with approx. 5–10 minutes between coats. The goal is an even matte black film without glossy areas.
• After the final basecoat layer, allow approx. 20 minutes flash-off time. The surface should no longer be tacky to the touch.

2) Flip-Flop effect paint – spray can

• Shake the spray can thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. We recommend making a test spray first.
• Apply 2–3 very thin mist coats, allowing approx. 10 minutes between coats. Keep a distance of 20–30 cm and maintain an even overlap of approx. 70%.
• Work smoothly and do not start or finish the spray pass in the middle of the part – this helps prevent stripes and uneven areas.
• Always keep the spray can vertical during application, with the valve and nozzle facing upwards. Tilting the can too much can cause spitting and pressure loss.

3) Clear coat – spray can

• Choose a suitable clear coat in gloss, satin or matte finish. Apply 2 medium coats, or 3 thin coats if needed, according to the technical data sheet of the selected clear coat.
• When using a 2K spray can, respect the pot life after activation. If you apply the clear coat the next day, lightly matt the surface first.

Basecoat – step one

After filler application, lightly matt the surface, degrease it with silicone remover / degreaser and wipe it with an antistatic tack cloth. Flip-Flop paint requires a black basecoat. The basecoat should be applied over a correctly prepared filler surface without sand-through spots and should dry to a matte finish. Allow approx. 10 minutes between coats. Usually 2 thin coats are enough; after the final coat, allow approx. 20 minutes flash-off time until the surface is matte and no longer tacky.

Flip-Flop effect paint – step two

Apply Flip-Flop paint over the flashed-off black basecoat in 2–3 thin coats, with approx. 10 minutes between coats. Use an HVLP spray gun with a 1.3–1.4 mm nozzle and a 1:1 mixing ratio with basecoat thinner. After the final coat, allow approx. 40 minutes flash-off time. The surface should be dry enough to gently wipe with an antistatic tack cloth before clear coating.

Clear coat – step three

After the Flip-Flop layer has flashed off, apply a suitable clear coat in gloss, satin or matte finish according to the technical data sheet of the selected product.
