Holographic Glitter – Application with Spray Can & Spray Gun

A properly filled, sanded and degreased surface is essential – without correct preparation, the final result will never be ideal. Read our complete guide: How to prepare the surface before painting. Once the surface is ready, you can begin applying the glitter.

Holographic glitter is applied in three steps: basecoat → holographic glitter → clear coat.

Holographic glitter – spray can application guide (400 ml)

Quick guide – spray can:
  • Basecoat: we recommend a black 1K basecoat with an evenly matte finish and no sand-throughs. The glitter does not completely cover the basecoat, and the effect is most pronounced over black.
  • Shake: for at least 2 minutes before application and regularly during use
  • Spraying distance: 20–30 cm · Overlap: approximately 70% · Movement: smooth, continuous passes
  • Number of coats: basecoat 2–3 · glitter 2–3 very thin coats · clear coat 2, or optionally 3 thinner coats
  • Coverage: up to approximately 1.0 m² with 2–3 thin coats, depending on the application technique

1) Basecoat – spray can

  • Lightly abrade the surface using a Scotch-Brite pad, degrease it with a silicone remover and wipe it with an antistatic tack cloth.
  • Apply black 1K basecoat in 2–3 thin coats, allowing approximately 5–10 minutes between coats. The goal is an even matte finish without glossy areas.
  • Important: holographic glitter can be applied over any base colour. However, because it does not completely cover the basecoat, the final appearance will always be influenced by the colour underneath.
  • After the final coat, allow approximately 20 minutes for the basecoat to flash off. It should no longer feel tacky.

2) Holographic glitter – spray can

  • Shake the spray can thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. Carry out a test spray on a sample panel before applying the paint to the final surface.
  • Apply 2–3 very thin mist coats, ensuring that the glitter is distributed evenly across the entire surface. Allow approximately 10 minutes between coats.
  • Use smooth, continuous passes. Do not begin or end a pass in the middle of the part, as this may create stripes or uneven patches in the glitter distribution.
  • Keep the spray can vertical at all times, with the valve and nozzle facing upwards. Tilting the can towards a horizontal position may cause spitting and loss of pressure.

3) Clear coat – spray can

  • Choose a gloss, satin or matte clear coat. For maximum durability and the most striking finish, we recommend a high-gloss 2K clear coat.
  • Apply 2 medium coats or, where appropriate, 3 thinner coats according to the manufacturer’s technical data sheet.
  • When using a 2K clear coat in a spray can, observe its specified pot life after activation. If the clear coat is not applied until the following day, lightly abrade the surface first.
Tips for a better result:
  • Always carry out a test spray on a sample panel. The base colour has a significant effect on the final appearance.
  • Both the spray can and the part must be at room temperature, ideally 18–25 °C. Work in a well-ventilated, dust-free area.
  • Begin each pass before reaching the painted surface and finish only after passing beyond it. Press the nozzle before the edge and release it after passing the opposite edge.
  • ⚠ IMPORTANT: Clear the nozzle immediately after every use. Turn the spray can upside down and spray briefly. A glitter particle may remain inside the nozzle and cause propellant leakage or loss of pressure.
  • When painting several adjoining parts, spray all visible surfaces together in the same position so that the glitter pattern flows evenly from one part to the next.

Holographic glitter – spray gun application

Quick guide – spray gun:
  • Basecoat: ideally a black 1K basecoat with an evenly matte finish and no sand-throughs. The glitter does not completely cover the basecoat.
  • Spray gun: HVLP · 1.3–1.4 mm nozzle · dilution 1:1 (paint : thinner)
  • Coats: basecoat 2 thin coats · glitter 2–3 very thin coats, allowing approximately 10 minutes between coats. After the final coat, allow approximately 40 minutes for the surface to dry sufficiently.

Basecoat – step one

After applying and sanding the filler, lightly abrade the surface using a Scotch-Brite pad, degrease it with a silicone remover and wipe it with an antistatic tack cloth. We recommend a black basecoat, as the glitter effect is most pronounced over black. Always apply the basecoat over an evenly prepared filler without sand-throughs. The basecoat must have a matte finish without glossy areas. Allow approximately 10 minutes between coats. Two thin coats are usually sufficient. After the final coat, allow approximately 20 minutes for the surface to flash off until it appears matte and no longer feels tacky.
Note: the effect also works over other base colours, but the final appearance will change according to the colour underneath.

Holographic glitter – step two (spray gun)

Apply the glitter over the flashed-off basecoat in 2–3 very thin coats, allowing approximately 10 minutes between coats. The goal is an even distribution of glitter across the entire surface. Use an HVLP spray gun with a 1.3–1.4 mm nozzle. Thin the paint at a ratio of 1:1 (paint : thinner). After the final coat, allow approximately 40 minutes for the surface to flash off. Before applying the clear coat, the surface must be completely dry. If necessary, remove dust very gently with an antistatic tack cloth.

Clear coat – step three

After the glitter layer has flashed off, apply a clear coat in gloss, satin or matte according to the manufacturer’s technical data sheet. We recommend a 2K clear coat for improved durability and UV protection. For the most striking effect, a high-gloss 2K clear coat is the best choice. Got a paint run? It can be repaired.

Tips:
  • Always carry out a test spray on a sample panel. Both the base colour and the amount of glitter have a significant effect on the final appearance.
  • Both the paint and the part must be at room temperature.
  • When painting several adjoining parts, spray all visible surfaces together in the same position so that the effect pattern flows evenly from one part to the next.
