Can I Use 1K Clear Coat Over Chameleon Paint?

Short answer

Yes, 1K clear coat can be used over Chameleon paint, but for the best result we recommend a 2K clear coat. Chameleon effect paint always needs a final protective layer. 1K clear coat is more suitable for less demanding parts, decorative objects or hobby projects. For cars, motorcycles, wheels and outdoor use, a 2K clear coat is the better choice.

Why is clear coat important for Chameleon paint?

Chameleon paint is an effect layer that creates a colour shift depending on the viewing angle and light. However, it is not a final protective layer. The clear coat protects the effect paint from damage, UV radiation, moisture, dirt and normal mechanical wear.

Without a final clear coat, the surface will not be sufficiently protected and the effect will not have the proper depth or gloss.

When can 1K clear coat be sufficient?

1K clear coat can be used for less demanding projects where high chemical and mechanical resistance is not required. Typical examples include decorative objects, interior parts or hobby projects that are not exposed long-term to weather, washing, fuel or heavier wear.

When do we recommend 2K clear coat?

We recommend 2K clear coat whenever the result needs to be durable and long-lasting. It is especially suitable for car body parts, motorcycle parts, wheels, bicycles, helmets and other parts used outdoors.
