Can I Apply Candy Paint Over a Black Base?

Short answer

No. A black base is not suitable for Candy paint. Candy is a transparent coating that needs a bright metallic or pearl base. Black absorbs most of the light and does not provide the reflection needed for the Candy effect. The result will be only a very dark to almost black shade.

Why does Candy paint not work over a black base?

Candy paint is not an opaque colour. It is transparent and its effect is created by light reflecting from the base coat. Light passes through the Candy layer, reflects from a bright metallic or pearl base, and then passes back through the coloured layer to create the typical depth and saturation of a Candy finish.

A black base, however, reflects very little light. The light is absorbed, so the Candy layer has no reflective surface to create its characteristic appearance. As a result, you will not get a colourful Candy effect, but only a very dark surface.

Which base should be used under Candy paint?

For the correct Candy effect, we recommend a bright silver metallic or pearl base. This creates the reflective surface needed for light and allows the Candy paint to show its depth, saturation and typical transparent appearance.

For warm Candy shades, such as yellow, orange or red, a gold metallic or pearl base can also work very well. The final colour will appear warmer, deeper and may have a stronger golden tone. However, the base must still reflect light – a black base is not suitable for a classic Candy effect.
